Rescue is a team sport
No shelter building means our entire rescue runs on people like you — fosters, drivers, photographers, and Saturday-morning event heroes.
Foster a dog
Fostering is the single most powerful thing you can do for a shelter dog: every open couch lets us pull another dog from a crowded kennel. Most fosters last two to six weeks, and you'll never do it alone.
We cover everything:
- All food, supplies, crates, and toys
- 100% of veterinary care
- A mentor foster on call, day or night
- Backup plans for vacations and emergencies
You provide the couch, the walks, and the intel that helps us make a perfect match. Fair warning: "foster wins" (deciding to adopt your foster dog) are common and fully endorsed.

A couple of hours a month is plenty. Pick the job that fits your life:
Transport driver
Drive a leg of a dog's journey from shelter to foster home — usually a 1–2 hour route on a weekend, with a very good passenger.
Event crew
Help run our weekend adoption events around DC: set up, hold leashes, answer questions, and talk about dogs all morning.
Photos & stories
Great photos get dogs adopted faster. Photographers, videographers, and writers help our dogs put their best paw forward online.
Supply wishlist
Prefer to give goods instead of dollars? Our foster homes always need crates, leashes, puppy pads, and food. Items ship straight to our supply coordinators.
Raise your hand
Tell us how you'd like to help and we'll get you started — usually within a few days.
